GITS
A Breakthrough in Advanced Glaucoma Surgery
What is GITS?
Glaucoma Intrascleral Tube Surgery (GITS) is an innovative procedure developed by Dr Ahmed Elbably to help patients with advanced and complex glaucoma. It was designed to overcome the main limitations of existing glaucoma tube surgeries, such as the Preserflo MicroShunt, which can fail in up to 30–40% of cases due to scar tissue blocking the outer opening of the tube.
With GITS, Dr Elbably created a scleral lake — a protective chamber inside the wall of the eye. The outer opening of the tube sits safely within this lake, shielded by a flap, which prevents scarring from blocking it. This unique design has increased surgical success rates to up to 95% in complex cases.

Why GITS?
Patients with advanced glaucoma often face a lack of effective options, particularly when traditional surgeries have failed. These patients are more prone to scarring, which makes conventional treatments less effective.

-
Less invasive than traditional glaucoma surgeries (though not classified as “minimally invasive”).
-
Offers a reliable solution when other options have been exhausted.

-
Those who have undergone previous failed surgeries.
-
Individuals at high risk of scarring, where traditional surgery has low success.
